This term our Science topic is materials. We will finding out about their different properties and uses.
Children will be encouraged to use their senses to explore and recognise the similarities and differences between materials.
They will explore and describe the way some everyday materials change when they are heated or cooled.
Information will be recorded in various ways linked to this topic.
Children will be taught to use the features of non -fiction and fiction texts.
They will be encouraged to use descriptive language to enhance their stories. Punctuation will focus on the use of capital letters and full stops ensuring finger spaces are between words.
Poetry will be linked to our topic work.
Please read daily with your child and focus on the meaning by discussing the text and answering questions.
Individual spelling books will be introduced during this half term. Please help your child learn their spellings and ensure they bring their spelling book in school on a Monday.
Please practise handwriting with your child using our handwriting script.
During this half term maths will focus on shape and the variety of words used for adding and subtracting. These words can be found in the maths classroom and your child would benefit from hearing these words used at home.
Children will be looking at the two dimensional shapes e.g. square and circle and their properties. Ask your child if they can spot these shapes in the environment and encourage them to draw some of these shapes.
Autumn Term 2nd Half
This term discussions will take place about the importance of exercise and hygiene. Parts of the body will be identified and how each of our organs is vital to our body.
Informative writing will be ongoing and the children encouraged using different formats to impart information. Punctuation will continue to focus on the use of capital letters and full stops with the addition of speech marks, question marks and exclamation marks.
To help your child please read daily with them, then discuss their book and ask questions to enhance their understanding of the text.
In our phonic groups we will be concentrating on how to use phonemes and the reading and spelling of key words.
Individual spelling books will continue during this half term. Please help your child learn their spellings and ensure they bring their spelling book in school on a Monday.
During this half term maths will focus on money and continue with the wide variety of words used for adding and subtracting. These words can be found in the numeracy classroom and your child would benefit from hearing these words used at home.
Please take your child shopping and encourage them to look at prices and how much change they would be given if they bought them. We will continue to talk about the properties and names of 3D shapes.
Spring Term 1st Half
Our Geography topic this half term will be all about Kenya. We will find out about its location, geography, way of life and flora and fauna. We will be comparing Kenya to Cumbria and identifying both on a globe and a map. We also discuss how animals are suited to living in these different places.
Discussions will take place on how our bodies change as they grow and elements involved in a healthy lifestyle. We will learn that animals including humans produce young and that babies and children need to be looked after while they are growing.
During this half term the children will be reading, writing and ordering numbers up to 400. They will also be partitioning and rounding numbers to 100+. Please encourage your child to practise this at home.
Encourage your child to look at and discuss times on the clock. We will be finding out about times past the hour.
We will also be finding out about and using the fractions ½ and ¼ .
While story writing special emphasis will be placed on sequencing events coherently and using descriptive language in stories. We will also be learning how to edit our own work.
Poetry linked to the environment topic will be read to the children.
Children will be encouraged to use a dictionary to find out both the meanings and correct spelling of words. This could be encouraged at home.
When reading with your child please put emphasis on discussing and asking in depth questions about the text.
