Our aim is to promote excellent levels of attendance and punctuality amongst all our pupils in order to:
- Deliver secure learning and continuity of development
- Celebrate high levels of attendance by awarding certificates
- Ensure children are always in touch and feel part of our school
- Develop a positive attitude to school.
- To provide a safe, secure environment and education appropriate to the needs of all children
- To inform parents of attendance and punctuality records
- To endeavour to contact parents on first day of absence
- To provide work for children absent due to longer term illness
- To work closely with the Education Welfare and the Access and Inclusion Officer in cases where attendance is unsatisfactory.
- To ensure that their child receives full time education.
- Arriving with their child promptly before registration
- Making medical/dental appointments after school hours
- Leaving the classroom as soon as possible after the morning bell.
Contact in case of Absence
Parents are to contact the office on the first day of absence by 9.30 am. If contact has not been made then the following steps will be taken.
- A reminder text will be sent
- If no contact has been made by 10.00am then a call will be made to held contact numbers in order of priority.
- If the above are unsuccessful then a visit will be made to the home address.
- Should the above not ascertain the safety of the child then the relevant authorities will be contacted.
Authorised and Unauthorised Absences
For legal purposes there are two categories of absences.
AUTHORISED absence, when parents have informed the academy of the absence and the reason for it seems to be reasonable. e.g. sickness, dental appointment, exceptional family circumstances e.g. bereavement.
UNAUTHORISED absence, when parents have not contacted the academy or where the reason for absence is inappropriate and not acceptable e.g. shopping, birthdays. Unauthorised absences from school carry the risk of prosecution under 444 (1A) of the Education Act 1996.
All attendance figures are collected and monitored by DfE and Ofsted.
- The bell rings at 9.00 am.
- Registers are taken by the teachers at the start of the morning and afternoon sessions.
- Registers are checked by the administration staff and any explanations received for absences entered into the register. Where an explanation has not been provided parents will be contacted firstly be text, if no response is received this will be followed by a telephone call.
- Attendance data is collected and analysed at the end of each half term.
Holidays in Term Time
An application must be made in advance by completing a 'Leave for Exceptional Circumstances Request Form' available from the school office. Holidays will only be authorised if there are exceptional circumstances. All unauthorised absence which meets the criteria (listed below) will be referred to Cumbria County Councils Access and Inclusion Team.

Term Time Leave of Unauthorised Absence/ Holiday requests
We have our new and updated School Absence Enforcement Policy. This policy clearly states that children who attend school regularly are more likely to be successful. Missing school leads to gaps in education that become difficult to fill. An unauthorised absence from school is any absence that is deemed not to be an acceptable reason for missing school. Unauthorised absences from school carry the risk of prosecution under the 444(1A) of the Education Act 1996.
Should your child’s attendance fall below the minimum government expectation of 90% and no improvement is shown, your certificate of attendance will be passed to the Cumbria County Councils Access and Inclusion Team, who may issue you with a Fixed Penalty Notice. This penalty is £60 per child per adult and must be paid within 21 days of receipt of notice, rising to £120 per adult per child if paid after the 21 days but within 28 days of receipt of the notice. If the penalty is not paid in full by the end of the 28 day period they must either prosecute for the offence or withdraw the notice.
Penalty Notices for Unauthorised Holiday in Term Time
There has been 10 sessions (5 consecutive days) or more of unauthorised absence due to leave taken during an academic year
Attendance is below 95% during the preceding 12 weeks before the leave was taken and the absence is unauthorised; or
. The leave was taken during the month of September; or
. The leave was taken during tests or examinations; or
. It is the second leave taken in any one academic year; or
. The pupil is in Year 2 or Year 6
